Creating habitat in an urban context doesn't have to be complicated. Here, the homeowner wanted to replace a resource hungry lawn with a space for pollinators & color to brighten the neighborhood!
Process and considerations
In the heart of an urban neighborhood, we transformed a resource-hungry lawn into a vibrant pollinator habitat that not only supports local wildlife but also adds color and charm to the community. The design incorporated low-maintenance, native plants, which thrive in urban conditions and provide nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
To make the vision easy for the customer to execute, we created a detailed, step-by-step plan that included planting guides, care tips, and clear layouts for the plant design to ensure a seamless process. All of the plants were delivered & placed exactly where they needed to be so all the homeowner had to do was plant! The new habitat replaced the monotony of a traditional lawn with a dynamic, eco-friendly garden that brightens the neighborhood and inspires others to reimagine urban green spaces.
Design constraints
The front yard is small, faces west, and while the street is seldom busy, a lawn offers little in the way of a sense of enclosure to the front porch. The owners wanted to avoid installing an irrigation system, and wanted something low maintenance, as they love traveling and spending weekends in the mountains. As nature lovers they hoped that whatever they installed could provide a haven for neighborhood wildlife & pollinators.
Solutions
Together, we designed a low growing meadow to fill the space. We included a dwarf Mulberry tree to break up the line of sight from the front door to the street (It’s also the owner’s favorite fruit). Large shrubs and ornamental grasses created a buffer from the neighboring property, and 5 species of native & drought tolerant perennial flowers created a long bloom window that keeps this yard buzzing with pollinators from March – October.
